Where to Stay in Kanchanaburi: Best Hotels by Area (River Kwai, Nature, City Center)
Wondering where to stay in Kanchanaburi? From riverside resorts to jungle lodges and city guesthouses, here’s our full guide to the best places to stay.
Kanchanaburi may appear to be a large town with a population of 55,000, but it nevertheless has an unusual density of hotels. The difficulty lies in finding accommodation that will allow you to combine sightseeing, relaxation and going out.
To get a better idea of the city, we can distinguish 3 zones. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. It’s up to you to determine your priorities.
Sleep not far from the River Kwai Bridge
Just over a kilometre from the city centre is the famous Maenamkwai Road, the city’s tourist district. This road runs parallel to the River Kwai. The district has the advantage of being very close to several of the region’s major attractions:
- The Bridge over the River Kwai,
- The station for the Death Railway,
- The Jeath War Museum
The atmosphere here is reminiscent of Bangkok’s Khao San Road, but less fun. However, the district has the advantage of being full of restaurants, bars, travel agencies, massage parlours, etc.
The area is perfect for those who want to get out and about and find cheap accommodation. While there are plenty of guesthouses, there are also a number of good-quality establishments overlooking the river and offering excellent facilities. We offer two resorts that we really appreciated on each of our visits.
Good Times Resort Kanchanaburi

Ploy Resort

Sleeping on the banks of the River Kwai
All along the banks of the River Kwai you’ll find hotels offering very good, if not excellent, facilities. Staying and sleeping in these hotels means being in a very natural setting and a very romantic atmosphere. The disadvantage or advantage is that they are a little far from the city centre or the famous Maenamkwai Road and its nightlife.
Rakmak Kan Resort & Cafe

Rakmak Kan Resort & Cafe
There are several establishments along the River Kwai and Rakmak Kan Resort & Cafe is one of the latest. Here it’s all about nature and calm in small groups. Very attentive staff for an establishment offering very good services. Ideal for unwinding and recharging your batteries away from the crowds.
Sleep totally off the beaten track and play the nature card
The aim here is to sleep on or near the river so as to take full advantage of the exceptional setting of Erawan National Park. So leave the Kanchanaburi area and head for Saiyoke. Several establishments have been set up there over the last ten years or so. It’s a charming place, but be warned: some establishments are real tourist suckers. To avoid this, here is our small selection:
River Kwai Jungle Rafts

River Kwai Jungle Rafts
If you’re looking for a complete change of scenery, then the River Kwai Jungle Rafts is perfect. Sleep on the river in bungalows floating on the river. A unique atmosphere, combining romance, exoticism and a unique sensation. It’s a change of scenery and very invigorating (for the morale!).
La Levée Resort

Another option is to sleep directly in Erawan National Park, at the foot of the waterfalls! To find out more about this option, see the article below:
