BACC vs. Guggenheim: A Unique Perspective

In the bustling landscape of Asian capitals, Bangkok has embraced the trend with its own Contemporary Art Center, drawing inspiration from the iconic Guggenheim in New York. However, while the architectural similarities are evident, BACC stands on its own with distinctive features.

The museum’s expansive design, reminiscent of the Guggenheim, features a noteworthy spiral corridor. Yet, differences emerge, particularly in the execution. The Guggenheim’s characteristic wide, descending spiral is replaced by a pale imitation. Navigating this corridor demands special attention, especially due to steep inclines that can be challenging. Some days, opting for the stairs at the rear becomes a safer choice.

Unique Museum Content

Beyond its architectural allure, BACC surprises visitors with a diverse array of artworks. Unconventional charcoal caricatures, not typical of traditional museum settings, add a unique touch to the experience.

On the first three floors of the spiral corridor, visitors encounter a rotating display of photographs by recognized artists and works from academic projects. The upper floor hosts an array of paintings where naivety and clumsiness intertwine. Information, mostly in Thai, is limited. Regular additions of new works by Thai artists keep the exhibits dynamic.

The 5th floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, offering the most intriguing displays. Check the museum’s website for the latest program. The final floor hosts more enduring exhibits.

BACC stands as a non-elitist institution, aiming to make contemporary art accessible to a broad audience. The goal is to attract both visitors and professionals, aspiring to gain recognition from international institutions.
