Wat Saket Bangkok: history of the Golden Mount

Wat Saket, or Phu Khao Thong, rises on a 75-meter-high artificial hill. Its history began in the 18th century with the construction of a huge chedi. Built on a mound of earth taken from the Chao Phraya River, the structure could not resist heavy rains and eventually collapsed. Abandoned for decades, the project was revived later by the monarchy.

A royal sanctuary and a Buddha relic

During the reign of King Rama IV, the hill was reinforced and a new chedi was erected. The works were completed under King Rama V, who consecrated the temple in 1898 when it received a Buddha relic. Later, in 1940, strong walls were added to stabilize the Golden Mount permanently. Since then, the golden stupa has shone above Bangkok as a spiritual landmark.
