An airport that handles all the traffic

Koh Samui Airport (in Thai: ท่าอากาศยานนานาชาติสมุย) is one of Thailand’s airports. It’s exclusively owned by Bangkok Airways, which holds a virtual monopoly on air traffic to the island.

In practice, Bangkok Airways operates nearly all domestic flights and the vast majority of international flights to Koh Samui. Additionally, three other airlines have limited operations to the island:

  • Thai Airways operates only 2 daily flights catering to European passengers on stopovers in Bangkok.
  • Chengdu Airlines provides flights to and from Chengdu.
  • SilkAir offers flights to and from Singapore.

The airport, which opened in 1989, continues to experience a surge in traffic. Despite Bangkok Airways’ near-monopoly, it stands as the second busiest airport in Thailand, only after Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport.
