Annual Commemoration at the Kwai River Bridge

The Kwai River Bridge Week Festival is held each year in Kanchanaburi to honour the many lives lost during World War II, when Allied prisoners of war and Southeast Asian civilians were forced to build the infamous bridge. The event usually takes place from late November to early December, with a major light-and-sound show recreating wartime scenes and offering a vivid journey into the past.

The Spectacular Light-and-Sound Show

Alongside the multimedia show, visitors can explore historical exhibitions, enjoy cultural performances, browse local product stalls, taste regional food or support the Red Cross at its annual fair. The Kwai River Bridge, made of steel and spanning the Khwae Yai River, was part of the Siam–Burma Railway linking Thailand to Myanmar. After the war, large sections of this military supply route were dismantled.

The Tragic Legacy of the Kwai River Bridge

More than 60,000 Australian, British, American and Dutch prisoners of war — and between 180,000 and 250,000 Chinese and Southeast Asian civilians forced into labour — worked on the railway. Malnutrition, harsh treatment and tropical diseases led to the deaths of 90,000 civilians and 12,000 Allied prisoners. This suffering earned the Siam–Burma Railway its devastating nickname: the Death Railway.

Did you know?
The story of the Kwai River Bridge became globally famous after the 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai, directed by David Lean and inspired by the 1952 novel by French author Pierre Boulle.
