Trat to Koh Kong Border Crossing: Complete Guide

Many travelers have questions about crossing the Thai-Cambodian border between Trat and Koh Kong. Here’s a practical guide with everything you need to know.

Thailand-Cambodia Border Trat to Koh Kong

The popular border crossing is at Khlong Yai, about 60 km from Trat and 12 km from Koh Kong.

Getting to the Border from Trat

Getting to the border from Trat is easy. Minivans run daily from Trat’s central bus station starting at 6:00 AM until late afternoon. The journey takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. Roads are in good condition, though drivers may drive aggressively at times. The fare is around 80 baht per person.

Alternatively, taxis are available but considerably more expensive.

Getting to the Border from Koh Kong

From Koh Kong, the border is only 12 km away. Tuk-tuks are the most common option, but you’ll need to negotiate the price. Don’t rush — there are plenty of drivers.

Most guesthouses and cafés in the town center can arrange transportation for you. The trip takes about 30 minutes. Some guesthouses also offer minivan services. Be sure to confirm if the bridge toll is included in the fare.

From the Border to Trat

Once you’ve completed immigration formalities and entered Thailand — welcome! If it’s your first time, you’ll appreciate the well-maintained roads and reliable buses.

From the border, hourly buses depart for Trat. Simply head to the main road near the small market.

From the Border to Koh Kong

After clearing immigration into Cambodia — welcome! You’ll immediately notice a difference in road conditions and transportation options.

To reach Koh Kong, you’ll need to negotiate firmly. Tuk-tuks and minivans often quote high prices. Don’t accept the first offer if you want to save money.

Walk away from the border, past the casino, and flag down empty tuk-tuks heading back to Koh Kong. Again, verify whether the bridge toll is included in the fare.

Border Crossing Practical Information

Visas:

  • Entering Thailand: Most travelers can obtain a visa exemption or visa-on-arrival (depending on nationality and previous visa runs). Always carry a photo and a pen for the forms.
  • Entering Cambodia: Travelers with student, non-immigrant, or retirement visas may apply for a re-entry permit. Bring a passport photo and US dollars for the visa fee.

At the Cambodian border, some individuals may offer “mandatory” medical checks for $5-10. Politely decline.

Currency Exchange:

  • On the Thai side: ATMs and official currency exchange services are available.
  • On the Cambodian side: Only unofficial money changers operate. There’s also a nearby casino where currency exchange may be available. An ATM was expected to open during our last visit; check if it is operational.

Border hours: open daily from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Arrive at least 30 minutes before closing time to allow for immigration processing.
