  • Population: approx. 660,000 (province) – approx. 80,000 (city)
  • Province: Chachoengsao

  • Main attraction: temples, floating market, rural experiences

A lesser-known yet fascinating destination

Only 75 km from Bangkok, Chachoengsao remains off the tourist radar despite its rich history and vibrant culture. The city lies on the eastern bank of the Bang Pakong River, a vital waterway for the region.

Founded during the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the 15th century, under King Borommatrailokkanat, Chachoengsao has served administrative and military roles before becoming a province in 1916.

A name with Khmer roots

The word Chachoengsao is derived from Khmer and means “deep canal.” Locally, it’s also known as Paet Rio or “Eight Slices,” referencing the traditional preparation of a giant snakehead fish, a local delicacy.

Deep spirituality and Chinese heritage

The region is home to prominent Buddhist sites like:

  • Wat Sothonwararam Worawihan, famous for its massive ubosot (ordination hall) and the revered Buddha statue Luang Phor Sothon.
  • Wat Saman Rattanaram, known for its enormous pink statue of Ganesh, the largest of its kind in Thailand.

Chachoengsao also reflects a strong Chinese-Thai identity, particularly around the century-old Ban Mai Market, where visitors can still feel the legacy of Chinese settlers through architecture, food, and local shrines.

Fertile land and eco-tourism

Thanks to the fertile plains of the Bang Pakong River, agriculture thrives: rice fields, shrimp farms, fruit orchards, and sugar cane. Many family-run farms offer educational eco-tourism, such as the well-known Mini Murrah Farm.

Nature lovers will also enjoy the preserved wetlands and mangroves ideal for birdwatching and riverside walks.

A hidden gem near Bangkok

Still untouched by mass tourism, Chachoengsao offers a slower pace and authentic experiences: traditional festivals, local markets, regional cuisine. It’s perfect for a one- or two-day getaway from the capital.
