Phi Ta Khon Festival 2025: Thailand’s Ghost Festival in Dan Sai

Experience one of Thailand’s most surreal and colorful festivals where ghosts, legends, and tradition come to life in the streets of Dan Sai.

The Phi Ta Khon Festival 2025, also known as the Ghost Festival, will take place from June 28 to 30 in the town of Dan Sai, in Thailand’s Isan region. This vibrant celebration blends Buddhist beliefs, ancestral spirits, and spectacular mask parades. Here’s everything you need to know to join the festivities.

A legendary tradition in northeastern Thailand

The Phi Ta Khon Festival is held every year in Dan Sai, a small town in Loei province, northeastern Thailand. For three days, locals wear colorful ghost masks and costumes, dancing through the streets in noisy parades.

Traditionally announced based on the lunar calendar, the festival now occurs on the first weekend after the sixth full moon—typically in late June or early July.

The Buddhist legend behind the ghost parade

The festival originates from the tale of Prince Vessantara, a former incarnation of the Buddha. After being exiled, he returned home to great celebration. The joy was so overwhelming, it was said to wake the dead, who joined the party.

Every year, Dan Sai honors this moment with a mix of fun, faith, and folklore.

Ghost masks, wood phalluses and spiritual parades

The grand parade on Friday showcases locals wearing patchwork costumes and tall ghost masks made from bamboo, coconut husks, and hand-painted details. Some carry wooden phalluses, symbols of fertility and protection.

The procession ends at Wat Phon Chai, with rituals held at other temples like Wat Prathat Song Rak.

A festive atmosphere from dawn till dusk

The day begins with music, dance, and traditional ceremonies. The mood is joyful and family-friendly in the morning, but becomes more lively—and alcohol-fueled—as the evening approaches.

Tip
Arrive early to enjoy the parade in a calm and welcoming atmosphere before the crowds grow.

Where to stay during the Phi Ta Khon Festival

Accommodation in Dan Sai is limited, and rooms get booked months in advance. If you can’t find a place in town, consider staying in Loei city, about 45 minutes away by car.
