June 3rd: Thailand Celebrates Queen Suthida’s Birthday – A National Holiday

June 3rd is Queen Suthida’s birthday, now a national holiday in Thailand. It honors her life, achievements, and role in the Thai royal family.

Who Is Queen Suthida of Thailand?

Born on June 3, 1978, Suthida Tidjai graduated in 2000 with a degree in Communication Arts from Assumption University in Bangkok. Before entering royal life, she worked as a flight attendant for Thai Airways.

Her Military Career

In 2014, Suthida joined the security detail of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn as Deputy Commander. Her military career advanced quickly—she was appointed Commander of the Royal Thai Aide-de-Camp Department’s Special Operations Unit in December 2016, then promoted to the rank of General. By 2017, she was acting commander of the Royal Thai Aide-de-Camp Department.

Relationship with the Crown Prince

Suthida became close to Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn after his divorce from former Princess Srirasmi Suwadee. Although their relationship was initially unofficial, she gradually became a key figure in his inner circle and personal security team.

Becoming Queen of Thailand

Speculation about Suthida becoming queen began around 2016. However, it wasn’t until May 1, 2019, that she was officially named Queen Consort. Her status was formalized during the coronation of King Rama X, held from May 4 to 6, 2019. Their marriage was registered at the Amphorn Sathan Residential Hall in Bangkok, witnessed by royal family members and Thai dignitaries.

Why June 3 Is a Public Holiday

To honor Queen Suthida’s birthday, June 3 is now an official public holiday in Thailand. Across Bangkok, portraits of the queen are displayed along major roads. Citizens wear purple—her symbolic color—and government buildings are decorated in purple and yellow, representing the queen and king, respectively.

Queen Suthida represents a modern image of Thai royalty, blending a distinguished military career with royal responsibilities, and earning the respect of the Thai people.
