Nakasong, a stop on the way to the 4,000 Islands
Nakasong, also known as Nakasang, is located in Champasak Province in southern Laos, on the eastern bank of the Mekong. The town lies close to National Road 13, one of the country’s main road routes.
For travellers coming from Pakse in particular, Nakasong marks the approach to Si Phan Don, the Lao name for the 4,000 Islands. The town is best known for its pier, where boats leave for several islands in the archipelago.
Nakasong is therefore not, strictly speaking, a tourist destination. Its main interest lies in its location: this is where the road gradually gives way to the Mekong. Nakasong is, above all, a stopover town.
During our own visit to Nakasong, we appreciated how quickly we could get from the bus station to the pier and, above all, how quickly we could continue on to the islands. Everything connects smoothly, waiting times are limited, and you can reach Don Det or Don Khon very quickly.
What is there to do in Nakasong?
Nakasong is primarily a practical stop. There is not much to do in Nakasong and, to be honest, the town has relatively little tourist appeal.
However, the market and local shops are useful for picking up a few things before continuing to the islands. The town’s services can also be helpful for travellers who need cash or want to stock up on supplies. There are two ATMs not far from the market. They accept international bank cards, although withdrawals are limited.
The main advantages of Nakasong are its access to the river and its small bus station, where buses and vans pass through every day.
The main practical advantage is that the two are located directly opposite each other. From the bus station, it is only about 50 metres on foot to the pier, where boats leave for Don Det and Don Khon, two of the main tourist islands in Si Phan Don.
From Nakasong to the 4,000 Islands by boat
Passing through Nakasong gives the journey to the 4,000 Islands a particular character.
After travelling by road from Pakse or another part of southern Laos, the boat takes you directly into the Mekong and its maze of islands. The journey becomes a real transition between the mainland and the river world of Si Phan Don. The crossing to the islands is fairly quick: during our visit, it took less than 15 minutes.
Nakasong: a stopover worth keeping in mind
Nakasong is often simply passed through without much thought. Yet for travellers, it represents the last stop on the mainland before reaching the islands. It is a useful starting point for exploring Si Phan Don before continuing towards Don Det, Don Khon or other parts of the archipelago.
It is particularly useful for:
- withdrawing cash in Nakasong, as ATM facilities on the 4,000 Islands are limited;
- making a few last-minute purchases, such as toiletries. There are small shops on the islands, but their choice is limited;
- checking transport options for the return journey to Pakse or Champassak, bus and van schedules, or information about crossing the border into Cambodia.
