Thailand is heading into another period of heavy rainfall from October 9 to 13, with Bangkok and surrounding areas particularly affected on October 10, 11 and 12. The new weather warning comes just as the capital prepares to host the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings.
Heavy rain forecast for Bangkok
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a new weather warning on October 7 covering October 9 to 13. Thunderstorms, gusty winds and locally heavy to very heavy rain are expected in several parts of Thailand during this period.
For Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, the main period to watch is October 10 to 12. The TMD warns that accumulated rainfall could lead to flash floods and overflowing waterways, particularly in low-lying areas and near canals and other drainage channels.
The warning follows heavy rain in Bangkok on October 6, when several roads were affected by standing water. Bang Kapi, Ramkhamhaeng, Lat Krabang and Min Buri were among the areas reporting flooding, while traffic was slowed on several routes.
Bangkok authorities have been working to increase drainage capacity and monitor water levels ahead of the next period of heavy rain.
The timing is particularly important for Bangkok
The new weather warning coincides with the 2026 IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, which will take place in Bangkok from October 12 to 18.
The Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) will serve as the main venue for the meetings. The event is expected to bring thousands of international delegates to the capital, while transport arrangements and security measures will be in place around the venue.
The weather forecast therefore comes at a sensitive time for the city. Reuters reported on October 7 that the expected rain in Bangkok and surrounding areas coincides with the start of the international meetings, following the flooding that affected the capital in September.
There is currently no indication that the meetings themselves will be cancelled or postponed. The relevant issue for residents and visitors is more immediate: heavy rain can temporarily affect road traffic, local drainage and travel times across Bangkok.
What to expect from October 9 to 13
The TMD’s current forecast places October 10, 11 and 12 as the main days of concern for Bangkok.
Residents and visitors should therefore allow extra time when travelling during periods of heavy rain, particularly on routes that are already prone to standing water. Low-lying areas and locations close to waterways require particular attention.
The TMD is also warning of waves of more than two metres in thunderstorms in parts of the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Boats and other vessels are advised to exercise caution and avoid thunderstorms.
The situation remains weather-dependent, and the forecast may change as the system approaches Bangkok.
This article will be updated as new official weather warnings are issued and as the situation develops in Bangkok.
