Entering Laos: Visa, eVisa and Online Arrival Card

Preparing for a trip to Laos requires knowledge of the essential administrative procedures. Visas, eVisas, online arrival cards and entry points: here is the complete guide to crossing the border with ease.

Entering Laos: what travelers need to know

Traveling to Laos requires a few formalities, but the process has become much simpler thanks to digital procedures. Whether you need a visa, an eVisa, a visa on arrival, or the new online arrival card, here is everything you should know before your trip.

Visa options for Laos

Foreign travelers must hold a valid visa to enter Laos.
There are three main options:

  • Electronic Visa (eVisa): applied for in advance on the official portal.
  • Visa on Arrival (VOA): available at selected airports and border checkpoints.
  • Embassy Visa: obtained from Lao embassies or consulates abroad.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and include one blank page.

The mandatory online arrival card

Since 2025, Laos has replaced the paper form with a digital arrival and departure card (LDIF).
It must be completed on the official immigration website a few days before entering or leaving the country.

How does it work?

  1. Complete the online form (personal details, passport, visa, first address in Laos).
  2. Upload the required documents (passport copy, selfie with passport).
  3. Receive a QR code.
  4. Present the QR code to immigration officers upon arrival.

The procedure is free of charge and must be completed for every new entry.

Where the system applies

The digital arrival card is currently required at four main international entry points:

  • Wattay International Airport (Vientiane)
  • Luang Prabang International Airport
  • Pakse International Airport (Champasak)
  • Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I (Vientiane – Nong Khai, Thailand)

Gradually, all other checkpoints will be included, and paper forms will be phased out.

Practical tips for entering Laos

  • Plan ahead: submit your online declaration 2–3 days before arrival.
  • Check your visa: a valid visa (eVisa, VOA, or embassy visa) is still mandatory.
  • Passport validity: at least 6 months with one blank page.
  • Keep a copy: save the QR code on your phone and carry a printed version.
