Where to Stay in the Perhentian Islands: Kecil or Besar?
Where to stay in the Perhentian Islands? Choosing between Kecil and Besar depends on your budget, travel style and whether you are looking for a lively or peaceful stay.
The difference between Perhentian Kecil and Besar
The Perhentian Islands, located off Malaysia’s north-east coast (around 65 km from the Thai border), are famous for their white-sand beaches and rich marine life. Their name literally means “stopping point” in Malay, and many travellers end up staying much longer than planned.
Perhentian Kecil: lively atmosphere and social island
Kecil is the smaller and more vibrant of the two islands, mostly popular with young and social travellers.
There are two main areas:
- Long Beach (east coast): fine sand, easy swimming and some fish close to shore. This is where most restaurants, accommodations and nightlife are located.
- Coral Bay (west coast): well known for its sunsets. Prices are often slightly lower than on Long Beach, and snorkeling conditions are usually better thanks to clearer water.
The overall atmosphere on Kecil is festive and sociable, ideal for meeting other travellers. A few quieter spots still exist for those seeking some calm.
It is worth noting that Coral Bay is not very wide and contains many dead corals and boat ropes, which can make swimming uncomfortable and walking along the beach risky.
Perhentian Besar: calm island for relaxing stays
Besar is the larger and quieter island. It is especially popular with couples, families and travellers looking for rest and relaxation.
Accommodation is generally more comfortable, although still quite rustic (bungalows, insects).
As on Kecil, snorkeling is possible on the north and east coasts. Besar is well suited to slow days spent on the beach, reading or simply enjoying the surroundings.
The atmosphere is more mature and peaceful than on its smaller sister island.
Where to stay in Perhentian Kecil or Besar?
Both islands offer an exceptional natural setting, each with its own character. However, services and infrastructure remain limited. Hotels in the Perhentian Islands are often expensive, with a level of comfort below what many travellers expect for the price, especially when compared to Thailand.
